BlackBerry Z10 in India for Rs 43,490

BlackBerry has just launched its new device, the BlackBerry Z10 in India. Now, the price for this device is Rs 43,490 which many are seeing as too steep. In fact the number was even trending on Twitter on Monday, with many people feeling that this is too high a price-tag for a smartphone.

The launch was largely dedicated to these features which were intent on emphasising that BlackBerry is now more intuitive and perfect for all those who are hyper-connected. So what is so new in the BlackBerry 10 OS? We take a look at the key features:

The Social Hub: This feature allows users to sync all their social networks – Facebook, Email, Gmail, Twitter, LinkedIn, BBM etc

The BlackBerry Balance: This allows users to divide their device into work and play. Your works apps and email are separate and your office IT admin has access to this, while the personal apps are separate and the IT admin does not have access to these.

Swipe and Keyboard: BlackBerry 10 is completely based on Swipe gestures. To move in and out of an app you need to Swipe, in the dead centre of the phone as we tried out.

Apps: This is the defining feature for any smartphone and while we heard mention of Skype and Angry Birds (yawn, yawn), the fact is that a lot of app developers aren’t creating native apps for the BlackBerry 10.

Microsoft also hacked by same cyberattack as Apple and Facebook

Microsoft has revealed it is the latest high-profile internet company to have its computer system hacked.

The software giant said it experienced a "security intrusion" similar to those suffered by social media site Facebook and technology company Apple earlier this month.
In a blog posted on its website, Microsoft insisted that there was no evidence of customer data being taken.

It said a small number of computers, including some of its Apple Mac computers – which are reputed to be targeted less by viruses compared to Windows computers.
Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Microsoft's trustworthy computing security team, said: "This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries."
Last week Apple announced it had been hit by malicious software, known as malware, which took advantage of a vulnerability in a Java program used as a plug in for web browsing programs. Read More

Google Launched Touch Screen Laptop

Internet search giant Google has launched a touchscreen laptop in a bid to take on rival firm Apple.
The new Chromebook Pixel has a high resolution display that makes individual pixels invisible to the naked eye.

Although Apple has a similar display, Google says the addition of touch, and 1TB of free storage on an online hard drive, make its machine more attractive to 'power' users, the Daily Mail reports.
The laptop, the first Google has designed and built itself, will be made in Taiwan.
According to the paper, the device uses Google's Chrome OS, which is based on the firm's web browser.
Although it does have a hard drive like a traditional laptop, Google also gives buyers a 1TB drive on on it's 'cloud' service, which is free for three years, although the firm said it did not know how much users would have to pay to keep this after three years. Source

Sony Announces the PlayStation 4

Sony Corp unveiled its first video game console in seven years on Wednesday that will let users stream and play video games hosted on servers, hoping the move will help stem user losses, pre-empt the next version of Microsoft's Xbox and propel it back to the top of the videogame hardware industry.

The company revealed its PlayStation 4 console, which will succeed the PlayStation 3, at a flashy event in New York with game developers like Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard in attendance. Sony said the console would be available for the holiday 2013 season. It did not immediately disclose pricing. The console will be up against the next version of the industry-leading Xbox console, which is expected later this summer.
The controller on the new console dubbed "DualShock 4" will have a touch pad, Mark Cerny, lead system architect on PlayStation 4, said. Sony purchased US cloud-based gaming company Gaikai for $380 million in July. Using that technology, the new console will offer a cloud-gaming service, the company said.

The 8GB PlayStation 4, which has been in development for the last five years, can also instantly stream game content from the console to Sony's handheld PlayStation Vita through a feature called "Remote Play," the company said. Sony has also revamped the user interface on the new console that keeps tabs on user preferences and added social networking features.
Sony's announcement comes amid industry speculation that Microsoft is set to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360 later this summer. The market-leading Xbox 360 beats the seven-year-old PlayStation 3's online network with features such as voice commands on interactive gaming and superior connectivity to smartphones and tablets. Gaining a lead over Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo Co Ltd's new Wii U could help Sony revive an electronics business hurt by a dearth of hit gadgets, a collapse in TV sales and the convergence of consumer interest around tablets and smartphones built by rivals Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. Tablets and smartphones already account for around 10 percent of the $80 billion gaming market.

Those mobile devices, analysts predict, will within a few years be as powerful as the current slew of game-only consoles. After six years, Sony PlayStation sales are just shy of Xbox's 67 million installed base and well behind the 100 million units of Wii sold by Nintendo, according to analysts. Source

Outlook vs GMail

Outlook Vs GMail : Microsoft’s Outlook.com takes on Gmail with $30 million budget

Microsoft is so confident it has the Internet’s best email service that it’s about to spend at least $30 million to send its message across the US.
The barrage begins Tuesday when Microsoft’s twist on email, Outlook.com, escalates an assault on rival services from Google Inc, Yahoo Inc, AOL Inc and a long list of Internet service providers.

As part of the process, all users of Microsoft’s Hotmail and other email services operating under different domains such as MSN.com will be automatically converted to Outlook.com by the summer, if they don’t voluntarily switch before then. All the old messages, contacts and settings in the old inboxes will be exported to Outlook.com. Users will also be able to keep their old addresses.
Email remains a key battleground, even at a time when more people are texting each other on phones. Read More
Google says Gmail has more than 425 million accountholders, including those that only visit on smartphones and other mobile device. The latest data from research firm comScore, which doesn’t include mobile traffic, shows Gmail with 306 million worldwide users through December, up 21 percent from the previous year. Yahoo’s email ranked second with 293 million users, a 2 percent decrease from the previous year, followed by Hotmail at 267 million users, a 16 percent decline from the previous year.
Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Washington state, is counting on Outlook.com to catapult the company back to the top of the email heap. During the preview period, Outlook attracted 60 million accountholders, including about 20 million that defected from Gmail, according to Microsoft. Comscore listed Outlook with 38 million users through December.
The new features being introduced in Outlook include: the ability to send massive files, including hundreds of photos at a time, in a single email; address books that automatically update new contact information that connections post on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; and about 60 percent fewer ads than Hotmail.
None of these features are revolutionary. Google already has been giving its users the option to switch to a new version of Gmail that also allows for larger files to be sent in a single email. And address books in Gmail already fetch new contact information posted on Google Plus, although it doesn’t yet mine Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Google declined to comment on Outlook.com. The company, which is based in Mountain View, California, plans to convert all of its Gmail users to its redesigned format within the next few months.

Facebook gets Unwelcome look at Hackers' dark side

Facebook is getting an unwelcome look at the shady side of the hacking culture that CEO Mark Zuckerberg celebrates. Intruders recently infiltrated the systems running the world's largest online social network but did not steal any sensitive information about Facebook's more than 1 billion users, according to a blog posting Friday by the company's security team.

The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.
The news didn't seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc.'s stock dipped 10 cents to $28.22 in Friday's extended trading.
The main building at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters lists its address as 1 Hacker Way. From there, Facebook serves as the gatekeeper for billions of potentially embarrassing photos and messages that get posted each month.
This time, at least, that material didn't get swept up in the digital break-in that Facebook said it discovered last month. The company didn't say why it waited until the afternoon before a holiday weekend to inform its users about the hack.
It was a sophisticated attack that also hit other companies, according to Facebook, which didn't identify the targets.
"As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future," Facebook wrote on the blog.
Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.
Late last month, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal — two of the three largest U.S. newspapers — said they were hit by China-based hackers believed to be interested in monitoring media coverage of topics that the Chinese government deemed important. More Info

History of Valentine Day

The story of Valentine's Day begins in the third century with an oppressive Roman emperor and a humble Christian martyr.   The emperor was Claudius II. The Christian was Valentinus. Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods, and had made it a crime punishable by death to associate with Christians. But Valentinus was dedicated to the ideals of Christ; not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his beliefs. He was arrested and imprisoned.
